WHY TO WORK HARD

WHY TO WORK HARD

One of my students shared this post with me and asked a question:

Sometimes you are unsatisfied with your life, while many people in this world are dreaming of living your life… A child on a farm sees plane fly overhead and dream of flying. But, a pilot on the plane sees the farmhouse and dreams of returning home. That is life! Enjoy yours… If wealth is the secret of happiness, then the rich should be dancing on streets.  But only poor kids do that.  Live simply, walk humbly and love genuinely.  All good will come back to you.

He further wrote:

“Sir, what is your opinion on this?  I personally think if we satisfy ourselves with what we have, we can not grow… We won’t work hard, we won’t learn new things… Doesn’t this post resist us from pursuing our dreams.”

Here goes my reply:

Life is all about exploring, learning, relearning, falling, getting-up, experimenting and growing.  All of us age, but not all of us grow.  We do not need to put any effort for aging.  Even if I do not do anything worthwhile still I shall age.  But if I look back at myself and see that I have learnt something in last few days, I have helped someone to lead better life, I have made some contribution towards something, I get a sense of growing.  Growing better is our choice and we keep putting efforts towards that.  Even when we are satisfied with today, we always keep looking forward for better tomorrow.  This is what keeps us growing.

It is a positive thinking that one gets satisfied with oneself with what one has but it shall in no way lead towards a sense of complacency.

Knowing oneself and one’s ability is a virtue.  There is a difference between satisfaction and complacency.  Satisfaction does not mean we need not move forward, we need not grow, we need not explore.  Whereas complacency makes us idle, it drives us to think that it is enough, no need to look beyond.  The moment one gets into the feel of complacency one starts getting away from time and that in a way kills the spirit of working hard.  This is not something people should aim at.  Rather in order to enjoy life and grow, we need to always relate ourselves with time and keep putting efforts to improve lives of the people around us.

As a student, we look forward to lead life on our own terms by becoming independent in that sense.  We get empowered through education that helps us take informed decisions.  After completion of studies, one joins an organization or starts an organization in order to achieve individual goal, in order to realise one’s dream.  After a certain age we might realise that we have achieved our individual goal and now it is needed to help people around us.  In all this we keep exploring new vistas.  We keep working hard.

There are two kinds of people, one that work hard, and another one that hardly work.  One has to choose between the two.  Working hard does not mean spoiling one’s health, getting mad about reaching targets, earning more and more, competing without competence.  Working hard means finding meaning in what one is doing.  The purpose is important and when one works towards the purpose, one does not even realise that one is really working hard.  Assigning meaning to what one does is important.

One cannot live without work, we are wired to work, we are born to work.  We need to make a choice and that choice is whether we are able to derive meaning through/in what we are doing.

Most of the times people get stressed out because they do not work for themselves but work for others.  This is an important aspect.  If one is enjoying what one is doing, one does not need to even think of working hard, it would come automatically, because such individuals work for themselves.

Work and money are mean to the end of leading good and happy life.  The moment you realise work and money is not making your life happy, change the course, take another boat, explore another territory, walk on uncharted journey, experiment with unexplored domains.  But please do not think it is enough and you do not need to grow.

Live simply, walk humbly and love genuinely.  All good will come back to you.  In any way it does not mean that you do not need to work hard.  Life is important, so keep enjoying life by working hard.  That is the prime reason why do we work hard.

  3. Dear professor, it is very aptly said in your reply. MAN IS BORN NOT TO REST AND RUST, BUT TO WORK , LEARN, GROW AND MARCH TOWARDS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE.
This is what Lord Krishna says in Bhagawat Gita : KARM (DUTY) KO PREM KARO AUR PREM SE KARM KARO.
Enjoyed reading your reply. Best wishes.

  8. Vijay has rightly said that we are wired to work. Swami Vivekananda said the same thing. Work induces a sense of fulfillment and happiness and a happy person is induced for work.

  9. Enjoyed reading the dialogue.
Working for a purpose larger than oneself makes the pursuit quite pleasurable and meaningful, specially in these troubled times.
Thinking that I am a part of several students’ teaching learning experience which will equip them for life is much more inspiring and humbling than thinking that I am just teaching them one course amongst several as part of a degree.
